Pickle Pot Time
We are going to the cucumber patch today and get some cucumbers to start a Pickle Pot. I like to start a new pickle pot every year. I cannot imagine not having a Pickle Pot in my refrigerator in the summertime. Everyone who comes here in the summer always heads for The Pickle Pot. This was my Pickle Pot last year when I introduced The Pickle Pot to all of you.
Today we are preparing a Pickle Pot for several people and a new one for me, so lets get started. The hardest part of the Pickle Pot is waiting for them to be ready.
Today we are preparing a Pickle Pot for several people and a new one for me, so lets get started. The hardest part of the Pickle Pot is waiting for them to be ready.
We Start With A Bed Of Onion Sprinkled With Salt
A Layer of Cucumber Sprinkled With Salt
Add The Pickle Spice
Repeat The Layers
Cover With Vinegar and Water
Cover Container and Refrigerate
Wait Two Weeks If You Can Then Enjoy!
The Pickle Pot
Miz Helen's Kitchen
1 Quart Glass Container
1 yellow onion sliced
3 cloves garlic
3 cups cucumber slices
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons pickling spice
White Vinegar to cover onions and pickles
Water to add to Vinegar
In a clean GLASS container begin to layer with sliced onions, then sliced cucumbers. Sprinkle the top with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1 pod of garlic. Repeat the layer and add 1 tablespoon of the pickling spice. Repeat the layer again ending with the last tablespoon of pickling spice and the remainder of the salt. Fill the container 3/4 of the way full with vinegar and 1/4 with water until the cucumbers and onions are completely covered. Seal the jar tightly and shake up and down to distribute the seasons. Place in the refrigerator for 2 weeks before serving, (if you can wait that long). As the Pickle Pot empties just add more cucumbers and onions and your Pickle Pot is always full all summer long.
I have a surprise for all of you Pickle Pot Lovers, just come back next Tuesday for a very special recipe for the Pickle Pot that I have developed for you. You will just love it!

My recipe is a bit different but I LOVE these!! We grew up eating them on white bread with a little bit of salt and pepper. The perfect sunny summer meal!!
ReplyDeleteMiz Helen, Could you do the same thing but instead of pickling spice, using fresh or dried dill? I have a similar recipe called quick pickles and there is absolutely no waiting for two weeks to have them - my family would never hold out! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Pary,
ReplyDeleteI see no reason why you couldn't use the dried or the fresh. There is dried dill in my pickling spice so that would be the same. I know what you mean about the waiting, but that's how my Grandmother taught me how to make it, I don't ever remember waiting the full two weeks. LOL!
Miz Helen
Yum! I can not wait to get my own pickle pot going. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea Miz Helen! I think I'm going to start a new tradition! Thanks for sharing this - love it!
ReplyDeleteThat looks delicious! I printed the recipe and I'll be making this soon. Mmmmm!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Beth
Love this picle pot! LG Tina
ReplyDeleteI could not wait to make these this year! I have three jars in the fridge now. Two weeks is a long time to wait.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you posted this....I have 5 Cucumber plants growing in my garden. So I am sure to have plenty to make this.
ReplyDelete*What is the ratio of water to vinegar?
Hi Lark,
ReplyDeleteThe Ratio of the vinegar and water is:
3/4 vinegar
1/4 water
Enjoy your Pickle Pot!
Miz Helen
Hi Miz Helen, those cucumbers look like standard salad cukes, not pickling. Which type do you use? thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your nice comments on my blog! I am always looking for ideas for cucumbers. This looks like something I should do!
ReplyDeleteHi Melynda,
ReplyDeleteI used the standard cukes in the new pot that I made for this post, however in the larger pot that is pictured first from last year I use all sizes and I keep that one going year round. The standard size are really great for burgers and sandwiches. Now I am headed to the Pickle Pot to have a pickle, that's what happens a person just can't stay out of that Pickle Pot.
Miz Helen
I can't wait to try this! We are so tired of store-bought pickles.
ReplyDeleteThose pickles look really good Helen.
ReplyDeleteI'm hosting my first link party today Cast Party Wednesday and would love it if you came by and shared this tasty recipe with us. http://www.ladybehindthecurtain.com/
Thanks,
I hope to see you there!
Hello Miz Helen, I am sharing your pickle pot on my Wednesday links, I think everyone needs a pickle pot and your instructions will make that possible, thanks!
ReplyDeleteYum! We love pickles. I am so doing this. Putting cucumbers on my list to pick up at the farmers market next week.
ReplyDeleteHow fun!! I am making a pickle pot this weekend:) Thanks for sharing......have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteLove pickles and this is a neat idea! Just one question... the refilling. Do you empty out any remaining onion, spices, etc or just keep adding more to it? Do you just add more cukes? I think this would be fun to do-thanks:@)
ReplyDeleteHi Lynn at Happier Than A Pig In Mud,
ReplyDeleteVery good question. Just keep adding cukes and if the liquid gets to low add a mix of 3/4 vinegar to 1/4 water with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pickling spice back to the pot. Be sure and come back next week for more Pickle Pot ideas, you will love them. Thanks for stopping by!
Miz Helen
Yay! I cannot wait to get my pickle pot started - I have a pickle-loving baby in this family and I am sure she will be grateful to you always for sharing your recipe!!!

luv luv luv this pickle pot idea!! thanks , and nice to meet you =)
ReplyDeletethis looks so good...I need to make one this year. I have always done it a little different but I really like this idea...
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me of this elderly lady my mom was friends with when I was a child. My grandmother never taught my mom how to cook, so this lady used to teach my mom all the "old" ways of doing things like making homemade yogurt, hard candy, and pickles. Every time I see a jar of homemade pickles, I always think of her. Thanks for the memory!
ReplyDeleteoh Miz Helen! What a fabulous idea! I have to try these.
ReplyDeleteThat's all you have to do? So easy! I know my husband will love this. I'll have to buy some cucumbers, because my plants aren't producing yet.
ReplyDeleteThis is just awesome. I cannot wait to try this!. Thanks so much for the great instructions and pictures.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea...I now have almost everything to get mine started...do you ever add sugar to the mixture?
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking this up to Made it on Monday! I have left a comment about this post the other day as well! :)
ReplyDeleteThat pickle pot looks like a wonderful idea. What a yummy wayto use your garden produce :) Thanks for coming by and sharing your recipe. Have a great weekend.

ReplyDeleteCarol
I cannot wait to make this - for my crowd I will need to have at least 2 of these going - so the cukes have time to pickle! I looked at the ingredients on grocery store pickles and just wanted to cry! Now I don't need them any more! Yea!
ReplyDeleteLiterally made my mouth water - I love plucking homemade pickles out of a jar ;) Thumbs up to the recipe and that lovely jar too.
ReplyDeleteWanted to drop in and let you know I made your recipe and we LOVE it! Our first jar is already half gone after only a week, and I just made two more jars to try and get them to the two full weeks. GREAT recipe, thanks so much for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteI also posted on my blog about it if you would like to check it out. http://angelfoodskitchen.blogspot.com/2011/06/miz-helens-pickle-pot.html
I have soooo many cucumbers right now, I will be making a pickle pot ASAP! Thanks for the great idea...I'm going to attempt making pickles too - but haven't done much canning. This will be easy and delicious!
