The Hour That Matters Most: Book Review

A number of weeks ago I was invited to participate in introducing "The Hour That Matters Most" by Les & Leslie Parrott  with Stephanie Allen and Tina Kuna. I am very excited to present this book to all of  you today. The Hour That Matters Most is a book centered around the family dinner hour, which I believe in and have practiced in our home for well over 30 years.

The author's Les & Leslie Parrott, PHDs are codirectors of the Center for Relationship Development on the campus of Seattle Pacific University and the bestselling author's of several other books. Authors Stephanie Allen and Tina Kuna are both recognized leaders in the food industry. Stephanie and Tina teamed up to open  the very first Dream Dinners Store and in 2006 they received the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur Of The Year award in the Pacific Northwest.

When our children were young we began a family dinner hour around our table. It was the one time during the day that we could all come together and enjoy a meal and communicate about our day.  I have always planned menus, and did my grocery shopping from the menus enabling us to save time and money. The menu for the evening meal was always posted on the blackboard, so everyone knew "what's for dinner tonight."
I am still making the menus and showing up for the dinner hour all these years later. As our children began to have their own families they to have adapted this practice.  My menu plans can be found at the top of my blog under What's For Dinner Next Week.

The Hour That Matters Most of course is the dinner hour. Now you might think oh we don't have time for that, we are to busy, we can't get them all in the same room long enough to have a meal. You might even say I don't know how to plan a menu or cook all that food. This book is your answer. It really is a basic guide to the most important hour that a family can spend together. The authors take you step by step in ten short chapters on a journey of simple directions to gather your family together every evening for that important hour. They give you such topics as Recovering the Lost Art of Eating Together, How to Listen So Your Kids Talk, Enjoying More Laughter and another whole chapter devoted to starting your own Fix and Freeze Club. In addition to these great topics there are twelve great family friendly recipes from Dream Dinners. There are great tips for communicating with family members including some jokes to get everything started. In a note from Tina and Stephanie, "Studies show that 65 percent of teens and young adults spend less than an hour a day unplugged. And that is exactly our call. Stop, Unplug, Postpone that text or conference call Have dinner together (or any meal for that matter)".

This is a great handbook for the family and it will be in my gift basket for all baby showers in the future. I hope you will get this book and invest in the most important hour of the day with your family.
