Cabbage and Sausage Stew

My neighbor gave me some great cabbage's from their garden the other day and I made several dishes from the Cabbage and this is one of the dishes I made. We just love a hearty soup or stew in the winter, it warms the heart and soul. This pot of stew smells heavenly as it simmers away just waiting to greet the family at the end of the day.

Ingredients
1 1/4 pound Polska Kielbasa Sausage Sliced
3 tablespoons cooking oil
2 pounds Red Potatoes medium chopped do not peel
2 medium size onion's medium chopped
3 carrots chopped
7 to 8 cups cabbage chopped
5 to 6 cups chicken broth
2 cloves garlic chopped
1 teaspoon thyme
2 tablespoons parsley chopped
1 teaspoon nutmeg
dash Cayenne pepper
Salt and Pepper to taste
In a hot dutch oven brown the sausage in the oil and remove it from the pot.
Brown the potatoes, onions, and carrots in the sausage oil then add the sausage back into the pot and stir in the cabbage.
Add the garlic, thyme, parsley, nutmeg, Cayenne, salt and pepper and mix well.
Add the Chicken Broth and mix well. If you want a thinner stew or soup just add water at this time.
Bring the stew to a boil and then cover, and reduce the heat to low and cook on low for 45 minutes or until the potatoes are beginning to break up.
No need to thicken the stew as it makes its own wonderful thick sauce.

  1. Cabbage and kielbassa... the only thing that could make that better would be a side of perogies.

  13. Cabbage Stew is one of my favorites! I like to make beirocks and then use the leftover cabbage to make stew. Your recipe sounds fantastic. I've never added sausage to mine stew before, but it looks like a tasty addition!

  14. I much prefer cooked cabbage to a slaw or salad. We have a local Polish restaurant that sells their incredible homemade kielbasa and this would be a perfect recipe for it. I can almost smell the aromas wafting from the kitchen! Yum!

  19. Thank you for the wonderful green chile stew recipe! I have some questions...what kind of oil do I brown the sausage in, it's not listed in the ingredients. Also what kind of onions do I use..it doesn't say. Also in the directions it says to brown the vegetables..which ones? It doesn't look like any of the vegetables are browned in the photos..
Thank you for a prompt reply..I'm in the middle of making this!

    1. Hi Chris,
Actually the ingredient list reads 3 tablespoons of cooking oil to brown the sausage in and then brown the potatoes, onions and carrots in the sausage oil. Thanks so much for stopping by and hope you enjoy the stew!
