Ingredients
1 1/4 pound Polska Kielbasa Sausage Sliced
3 tablespoons cooking oil
2 pounds Red Potatoes medium chopped do not peel
2 medium size onion's medium chopped
3 carrots chopped
7 to 8 cups cabbage chopped
5 to 6 cups chicken broth
2 cloves garlic chopped
1 teaspoon thyme
2 tablespoons parsley chopped
1 teaspoon nutmeg
dash Cayenne pepper
Salt and Pepper to taste
In a hot dutch oven brown the sausage in the oil and remove it from the pot.
Brown the potatoes, onions, and carrots in the sausage oil then add the sausage back into the pot and stir in the cabbage.
Add the garlic, thyme, parsley, nutmeg, Cayenne, salt and pepper and mix well.
Add the Chicken Broth and mix well. If you want a thinner stew or soup just add water at this time.
Bring the stew to a boil and then cover, and reduce the heat to low and cook on low for 45 minutes or until the potatoes are beginning to break up.
No need to thicken the stew as it makes its own wonderful thick sauce.
This Smells So Good As It Simmers Away on The Stove

Cabbage and kielbassa... the only thing that could make that better would be a side of perogies.
ReplyDeleteThat is my men's favorite stew, they just can't have enough of it! Great post.
ReplyDeleteMiz Helen, this is right up my alley! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteCabbage is so often overlooked and underappreciated! Not here.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to use cabbage! I am a big fan of cabbage and sausage together. I would love for you to share this on Allergy Free Wednesdays tomorrow if you get a chance: http://www.glutenfreepantry.blogspot.com/p/allergy-free-wednesdays.html
ReplyDeleteLooks like something I would love-enjoy:@)
ReplyDeleteYou've out done yourself this time Miz Helen, I love your cabbage stew. The red potatos made it a done deal in my book. Thanks for the recipe. Smiles.
ReplyDeleteHoly cow, Miz Helen...this looks and sounds great! I am going to make this for the hubby...and myself! ;)
ReplyDeleteThat stew looks amazing. What a delicious combination.
ReplyDeleteOh my, Miz Helen, this looks like comfort food!
ReplyDeleteA comfort food for sure! I used to make this, almost identical, years ago. Love the cabbage, and the sausage combination. Such a comforting, light, and delicious stew, Miz Helen.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Is there anything better than a great stew? I am really in to soups right now. I posted one this week too.
ReplyDeleteCabbage Stew is one of my favorites! I like to make beirocks and then use the leftover cabbage to make stew. Your recipe sounds fantastic. I've never added sausage to mine stew before, but it looks like a tasty addition!
ReplyDeleteI much prefer cooked cabbage to a slaw or salad. We have a local Polish restaurant that sells their incredible homemade kielbasa and this would be a perfect recipe for it. I can almost smell the aromas wafting from the kitchen! Yum!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds delicious! I like the addition of the nutmeg - that would add a lovely flavour. This sounds like a delicious meal for a cold day, or after working in the garden. Thank you for sharing it with the Gallery of Favorites.
ReplyDeleteYum!!! I love cooked cabbage and this is a recipe that my husband will really enjoy as well! Thanks for sharing. Stopping by from Melt In Your Mouth Monday!

I shared this recipe on pinterest, facebook, and any other social media I could find. :) I WISH I had the ingredients for this because I would make it for dinner tonight. This looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteI am making this right now. It is 6 degrees out and this stew sounded so wonderful. The house smells great! It is coming together nicely. I used turkey smoked sausage because that is what I had on hand. Thanks for a great recipe!
ReplyDeleteHi Kristy,
DeleteI sure hope that you and your family enjoy the stew, the Turkey Sausage would be a great addition. You'all stay warm and enjoy!
Miz Helen
Thank you for the wonderful green chile stew recipe! I have some questions...what kind of oil do I brown the sausage in, it's not listed in the ingredients. Also what kind of onions do I use..it doesn't say. Also in the directions it says to brown the vegetables..which ones? It doesn't look like any of the vegetables are browned in the photos..
ReplyDeleteThank you for a prompt reply..I'm in the middle of making this!
Chris
Hi Chris,
DeleteActually the ingredient list reads 3 tablespoons of cooking oil to brown the sausage in and then brown the potatoes, onions and carrots in the sausage oil. Thanks so much for stopping by and hope you enjoy the stew!
