Spring Garden Projects

Kitchen Herb Garden and Vine Fence are two of the project's that we have on our spring garden bucket list. We like to get most of our special garden project's finished in the spring, so we can enjoy them as the garden season moves along. This year we had two projects on our bucket list for completion. The first project is a Kitchen Herb Garden just outside my kitchen door and the other a smaller project for climbing vines that is located in one of the larger garden area's. This post gives complete instructions for building both of these projects.

The Kitchen Herb Garden

My husband was so sweet to make this special raised bed just outside my kitchen door, so when I am using herbs in a recipe all I have to do is step just outside the door.

Construction of The Bed

All the grass was removed, then the ground was leveled.  

Next he cut two 2X10's 9 ft long for the sides.

For the ends two 2X10's 14 inches long.

The ends were fastened with 2 inch wood screws.

Then reinforced with steel metal strapping.

After the box was placed, 1 stake was placed

 on each end and secured with screws.

Filling The Box
To help prevent weeds and grass from growing, place several layers of
newspapers on top of the leveled ground.
Fill 3/4 full with top soil and our homemade compost mixture.

The Final Layer
Complete the fill with a thick layer of our
homemade organic compost and fertilizer mix.

Now It Is Ready To Plant
We planted Rosemary, Sage, Basil,
Italian Oregano, Parsley and German Thyme.
We will be adding more herbs along with a fairy garden as we go along.

The Vine Fence Has been construted for the vining vegetables that we plant every season. 

The Fence Construction

Using 3 2X2's 6 feet long
Using a miter saw, cut sharp points on the bottom of the 2X2's, making a stake.
Drove the 2X2 stakes into the ground, leaving a height of 4 feet and 4 feet apart.
Secured the 3 stakes with two additional 2X2's to add stability to the top.
Next, using a 2X3 inch mesh vinyl coated welded wire fencing.
Secure them to the post with a air powered staple gun.
Zip Ties were applied to the top wire to keep it stable.
