Cranberry-Pretzel Dessert

Cranberry-Pretzel Dessert at Miz Helen's Country Cottage
My original recipe for this dessert is very old and the card is yellowed, we have made it for many years. Some of my friends make a recipe that is very similar and they call their recipe a salad, but to us it has always been dessert. It has layer's of flavors starting with a salty base then a creamy sweet layer and ending with a tart cranberry topping. This is a great dessert to serve anytime but is especially great for holiday meals and events. Take it to your covered dish dinners, luncheons, and then it is perfect for that special family gathering.

Ingredients
5 cups pretzel sticks, crushed fine
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup butter, melted
Spray cooking oil
1 ( 8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup confectioners sugar
1 (8 ounce) container whipped topping
1 ( 3 ounce) box of cranberry gelatin
1 cup boiling hot water
1 cup whole berry cranberry sauce
Garnish with Whipped Cream
Directions
Spray a 8 X 11 baking pan with cooking oil spray and set aside.
In a food processor, process the pretzel stick until they are fine crumb.
Pour the crushed pretzel and sugar into a small bowl and pour in the melted butter.
With a fork blend the butter and pretzel mix until it is completely incorporated.
Press the pretzel-butter mixture into the bottom of the baking dish. With a heavy cup smooth the mixture in the bottom of the dish.
Place the baking dish into a heated 350 degree oven and bake for 15 minutes until firm.
Remove from oven and place on a cooling rack until completely cooled.
In a mixing bowl, mix the cream cheese and confectioners sugar until completely smooth.
Stir in the whipped topping and mix by hand until completely smooth.
Pour the cheese mixture onto the baked pretzel crust.
Place in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
In a mixing bowl mix the cranberry gelatin with the boiling hot water. Mix the gelatin until completely dissolved.
Add the whole berry cranberry sauce and mix well.
Refrigerator for 45 minutes until it begins to thicken.
Remove from refrigerator and mix to loosen the gelatin and cranberry.
Pour the cranberry-gelatin mixture on top of the cream cheese filling.
Place in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours in order to set completely.
Slice and garnish with whipped cream and mint or rosemary.
Enjoy!

  2. Where can you find cranberry gelatin? We live in Minnesota and have not been able to find it. Still need to check Walmart, but unless it is there, I have yet to find it in local grocery stores here. Thank you!

    1. Hi Anonymous,
I bought my gelatin (Jello) at Wal Mart and also our local Brookshires. You might be able to order it from Amazon or Wal Mart. Some people substitute cherry flavor, but the cranberry is much better, if you can get it. I sure hope you can find it and are able to try the dessert. Be sure and come back to let us know if you find it. Hope you have a bountiful thanksgiving and thanks so much for stopping by!

  3. Thank you so much for the information on where I can purchase the cranberry gelatin! I would LOVE to try this recipe with the cranberry flavor! I already do a similar recipe to this using raspberry gelatin, frozen raspberries plus some fresh raspberries and it's eaten up at every event. When I saw your recipe with the cranberry, I just thought it was a lovely twist. Thank you for taking the time to answer my inquiry and for getting the information -- I have tried one of our Walmart stores here in town, will still try the one on the other side of town yet, too, looking for the gelatin. Our local Hy-Vee grocery stores, Cub and Fareway stores do not carry it. I am a regular visitor to your website -- thank you so much for sharing your recipes and your life with us. I truly appreciate your help with my question!
