Spring Garden Tour 2022

Spring Garden Tour 2022 at Miz Helen's Country Cottage

We start planting our spring garden in late January and by this time the end of April the first part of May the vegetables are up and some ready for harvest. I am so happy to take you on a short tour of our garden progress for this year.

Vegetable and Herb Garden 2022
Planting and Progress

We started getting our ground ready in the fall and let it set and rest until planting time. We have our own  Garden Compost Helper so
the first thing we do in the spring is work the compost into the soil,
 then plow the rows.
We planted 400 yellow blub onions January 30, 2022. It was a warm day for January and we were able to bundle up and plant. Of course we always have our little Max- Garden Dog to supervise our efforts.

Shortly into the season, our old,(very very old) Rototiller just gave up. My husband said he didn't think it would
make it yet one more season. We parked it on our corner and put a free sign on it. It was no time
until a young man came and picked it up. He was so excited about trying to fix it up and have a garden for he and his young bride.
We were thrilled to give it to him.

Our Bradford Pear Trees are some of the first to bloom. We know that Spring is arriving with all the little wild flowers blooming .

I made a decision to let the winter collard greens go to seed.
When they seed out they have the most beautiful blooms, I take the seed pods and save for the winter planting of collards and I get to enjoy the beautiful yellow blooms of the the seed process.

The Collard blooms, so beautiful and delicate.

By mid February our onions were starting to pop their
heads up and out of the ground.

We planted 144 potatoes on Valentine Day. It was a pretty cold day, but we preserved, knowing that come spring we would have a great potato harvest. By mid March they had vines up and we were  beginning to pull the soil up around the stems.

I love watching the green beans come up. The little bean just splits and pretty green leaves begin to set on.

Just look how everything is growing, so green and beautiful!

The potatoes and green beans are doing very well. We are in a border line drought area and have not had a lot of rain this year,
so we are having to water more.
We moved an old fashioned picnic table under the old Oak Tree last summer, the older I get, the more I need to sit down and take little breaks. I love having the old picnic table in the shade of the tree. It is real handy for sorting seed,
and especially having a little rest while tending the garden. I may just celebrate my 83rd birthday this summer right there on that table. Maybe I will just have a garden birthday party!

The potatoes are starting to bloom, then it won't be long before the vines die back and we will begin to harvest the potatoes. In a few short weeks the green beans will begin to bloom and then set on green bean pods. I can almost taste a pot of

We planted 3 different kinds of squash. We planted Yellow Summer Squash, Butternut Squash and Zucchini. The squash has all come up and is doing well. In a few short weeks
it will begin to put on blooms, then the beautiful squash will set on.

The onions are doing very well and we are beginning to pull some of them as green spring onions, they are delicious! The blackberry bush is blooming, looks like we will have a great harvest of blackberries.

We devoted 2 of the garden squares to
heirloom, canning, slicing, and Roma tomatoes.
The tomatoes are doing really well and some are starting to bloom.
We do have a couple of green tomatoes already.

We have two large raised bed garden trays on the edge of our flagstone patio. The Patio Herb Garden sits very close to the
Bar-B-Que Grills and Smokers, a great place to have some
added herbs for the grill recipe.

A patio tomato in a clay pot, a little container gardening.
Sitting on the flagstone patio and doing very well,
has 1 green tomato and several blooms.

We have Rain Barrel's attached at each of our drain spouts. The rain drains into the Rain Barrel and then we water our house plants and sometimes outdoor plants with the saved rain water. This Rain Barrel sits by a beautiful Antique Rose that will bloom well into the fall.

Gardening is a great hobby and a very healthy contribution to the family table. I remember doing garden chores
with my Grandmother and my parents.
My kids remember doing garden chores with us and
today they are teaching their grandchildren,
my great grandchildren how to grow vegetables
and bring them to their table.

My husband will be 84 in September and I will be 83 in July, clearly we are so blessed with good health. But even at that we have had to slow down just a bit with our gardening. The Lord willing we will just keep on growing vegetables as long as we can.

Thanks so much for sharing the garden tour with us today. We have started a project with our Up-Stairs Garden that we will share at a later date when we have completed it. Hope you are able to enjoy your own garden, but if you can't there are wonderful Farmers Markets that offer lots of fresh fruits and vegetables for your table.
Peace and Joy

  8. I am envious of your garden!! I have two very small raised beds in the only area that gets enough sun. Small as it is, I'm proud of it and love working it. The rest of our quarter acre is trees and flowers - and a little bit of lawn. Your garden inspires me to do something a little different next year. Thanks for sharing yours!! Happy Harvesting!
