Old Fashioned Country Fried Squash
It is always nice when you can walk out to your garden and bring in some fresh squash to cook for the evening meal. We don't really eat that many fried foods, but fried squash is one of our favorites. I had a young homemaker contact me the other day and asked for a squash recipe that would be close to what her Grandmother used to make for their family. After she made the recipe she told me that it brought back so many memories for her and her family. It sure brought some for me as well and we sure enjoyed this platter of fried squash!

This Is How We Made
Old Fashioned Country Fried Squash
We start with a great basket of squash
from the garden.
it is a smooth process.
Squash is washed, sliced, salted, tossed in flour, dipped in milk and egg, then back into the flour mixture. Then I place them on the lined cookie sheet so I don't have to stop the frying process.
Place the battered squash into a deep skillet with hot vegetable oil and fry until golden brown.
Remove the golden brown squash from the skillet to a baking sheet lined with paper towels. Let the squash drain on the paper towel for a couple of minutes before serving.
Recipe
These fried squash are just delicious, crunchy on the outside
and soft on the inside, with a perfect balance of flavor.
I like to serve my squash with a great buttermilk or ranch dressing.
Our recipe for Old Fashioned Country Fried Squash came to me from my Grandmother who had a wood burning stove and a black iron kettle full of lard frying up a "mess" of squash, and it was the best squash I ever put in my month. God bless all of those southern ladies who gave us such a heritage!
Thanks for stopping by today and we hope to see you again real soon!

This sounds delicious! My family always made fried zucchini with Italian seasoned breadcrumbs (though the batter often fell off a bit on one side).
ReplyDeleteThe fried squash looks so yummlicious! Great snack with beer I must say. Thanks so much for sharing and for posting on Fiesta Friday. Hope to see you again at the party.
ReplyDeleteThis looks so good - I pinned it! I've used up my squash this year, but I'm going to hit the Farmer's Market to try this one. Thanks for sharing at the What's for Dinner party. Hope your weekend is amazing!
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to make these for me when I was little. I called them bikini's because I couldn't say zucchini :) I try to make them at leas once every summer. Thank you so much for sharing your recipe at the Senior Salon Pit Stop! I'm excited to be featuring your post at Monday’s party. Congrats! Pinned
