Old Fashioned Boiled Cabbage
We love our Old Fashioned Boiled Cabbage. This recipe takes me all the way back to my Grandmothers table. We would go out to her winter garden and pick a cabbage bring it into the kitchen and she would work her magic. This is that same recipe with no changes that I know of. It is still one of my favorite sides or just a meal all by itself with a great skillet of Old Fashioned Buttermilk Cornbread.

Old Fashioned Boiled Cabbage
A garden to table recipe, and a family favorite. Delicious recipe handed down through the generations.
Ingredients
- 4 strips bacon, chopped
- 4 tablespoon butter
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium head of cabbage, cut into wedges
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 6 cups chicken stock
Instructions
- Chop the bacon into bite size pieces, add the bacon pieces to the heavy stew pot. Cook the bacon until the fat is rendered. It's ok if it gets brown on the bottom, that's some of the goodness that will make this recipe good.
- Add the butter to the bacon and then add the chopped onions. Cook the onions for about 5 to 6 minutes, stirring and add the garlic. Cook the onions until they are clear.
- Add the wedges of cabbage and season the cabbage wedges.
- Pour in the stock around the edge of the cabbage. Bring the cabbage to a boil, then place the lid on the pot. Reduce the heat to medium-low heat and cook for about 1 hour or until the cabbage is tender.
